Don Lewis fell into flour because of his chickens. Back in the late 1990s, he went to Lightning Tree Farm for organic chicken feed and saw that Alton Earnhart was growing wheat. The farmer offered him a bag of flour, and this piece of wheat history began.

Five Ways Small-Scale Organic Farming Can Save Agriculture From America’s ‘Greed For Profit’ System http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/five-ways-small-scale-organic-farming-can-save-agriculture-from-americas-greed-for-profit-system/ http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/five-ways-small-scale-organic-farming-can-save-agriculture-from-americas-greed-for-profit-system/#comments Wed, 26 Sep 2012 16:07:46 +0000 Editor http://eatlocalguide.com/?p=4332

All around the world, the push to globalize the food supply by consolidating food production into large-scale, corporatized agricultural systems controlled by a select few is causing massive environmental destruction and immense poverty. And the only way to truly turn things around is to return to small-scale, independent, organic farming models in which people, not corporations, control the food supply, and grow quality food for their families and communities without government interference.

New California Law Powers Up Home Food Production http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/new-california-law-powers-up-home-food-production/ http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/new-california-law-powers-up-home-food-production/#comments Tue, 25 Sep 2012 19:53:34 +0000 Editor http://eatlocalguide.com/?p=4317

Late last month, the California State Assembly passed new legislation that would assure legal status for small-scale cottage industries that sell baked goods and other "non-potentially hazardous" food items produced in home kitchens. We're talking homemade cookies and brownies, jams, jellies, fruit pies, mixed nuts, flavored vinegars, dried teas, roasted coffee, and other yummy stuff that's already legal in more than 30 other states including Oregon, Washington, Texas, and Michigan which have similar legislation in place.

Scientists: No To Genetically Modified Crops, Yes To Paradigm Shift http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/scientists-no-to-genetically-modified-crops-yes-to-paradigm-shift/ http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/scientists-no-to-genetically-modified-crops-yes-to-paradigm-shift/#comments Tue, 25 Sep 2012 19:45:51 +0000 Editor http://eatlocalguide.com/?p=4319

Dr. Walter Goldstein of the Wisconsin-based Mandaamin Institute emphasized not only the failure in the U.S. of GM crops to outperform conventional crops but also the high price farmers pay when they choose GM seeds. "The path of adopting widespread use of high-tech GMO technology in the USA has been accompanied by greater consolidation of resources and power for few seed companies, higher seed prices, greater risk for farmers and less choice in varieties with hardly any increase in productivity."

Planting Rebellion: How To Reclaim Our Seed Culture http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/planting-rebellion-how-to-reclaim-our-seed-culture/ http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/planting-rebellion-how-to-reclaim-our-seed-culture/#comments Mon, 24 Sep 2012 14:56:56 +0000 Editor http://eatlocalguide.com/?p=4309

“In the course of getting a plate of food to our table, we’re paying a lot of attention to the farmer, the chef, the farmers market — all of that is as it should be, but we pay very little attention to the thing that starts it all, the seed.” That sentiment comes from Janisse Ray, farmer and author of the new book The Seed Underground: A Growing Revolution to Save Food.

What Not To Eat: Arsenic http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/what-not-to-eat-arsenic/ http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/what-not-to-eat-arsenic/#comments Thu, 20 Sep 2012 12:41:27 +0000 Editor http://eatlocalguide.com/?p=4301

Never one to pass up an opportunity to spread a little doom and gloom, I felt compelled to emerge from blog-writing hibernation to bring you the latest bummer food news.  Today, Consumer Reports released “Arsenic in Your Food,” a report describing its recent investigation of arsenic levels in rice.  The results are unsettling.  According to the report, analysis of 65 rice and rice products (including infant cereals, hot cereals, ready-to-eat cereals, rice cakes, rice crackers, rice pasta, rice flour and rice drinks) revealed that samples of almost every product contained measurable levels of total arsenic, including organic and inorganic forms.

What Exactly Are GMO’s And Why Should They Be Labeled? http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/what-exactly-are-gmos-and-why-should-they-be-labeled/ http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/what-exactly-are-gmos-and-why-should-they-be-labeled/#comments Wed, 19 Sep 2012 13:47:04 +0000 Editor http://eatlocalguide.com/?p=4293

GMOs (genetically modified organisms) were brought into the world by a chemical company, not an agriculture or food group. Monsanto created DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange, marketed aspartame, and created bovine growth hormone (rBGH) to infect milking cows that put pus into commercial milk.

Egged on by massive food-industry marketing budgets, Americans eat a lot of sugary foods. We know the habit is quite probably wrecking our bodies, triggering high rates of overweight and diabetes. Is it also wrecking our brains?

Glavine: Twenty Percent Local Food By 2020 http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/glavine-twenty-percent-local-food-by-2020/ http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/glavine-twenty-percent-local-food-by-2020/#comments Fri, 14 Sep 2012 21:33:46 +0000 Editor http://eatlocalguide.com/?p=4262

As a bountiful harvest unfolds in the Annapolis Valley and throughout our province, there is every indication that a strong local economy is possible. In my view, it must be a key goal of government policy. That is why in 2010, the Liberal party established the target of 20 per cent local food production and consumption by 2020.

The Global Food System Casino http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/the-global-food-system-casino/ http://eatlocalguide.com/blog/the-global-food-system-casino/#comments Fri, 14 Sep 2012 16:14:21 +0000 Editor http://eatlocalguide.com/?p=4247

Food is our nourishment. It is the source of life. Growing food, processing, transforming and distributing it involves 70 per cent of humanity. Eating food involves all of us. Yet, it is not the culture or human rights that are shaping today’s dominant food economy. Rather speculation and profits are designing food production and distribution. Putting food on the global financial casino is a design for hunger.
